Fortunately, there are more than one way to recover the data lost during the process of iOS 9 updating.
I am not going to talk about much about how to restore your iPhone or iPad with iTunes or iCloud from iTunes or iCloud backup file, as you can refer to Apple Support Community for detailed steps. Besides, personally, I don’t prefer restoring your lost data from your iTunes backup directly, because this will result in data overlapping and permanent data erasing.
I would like to share a solution of recovering data lost while updating to iOS 9 without worry about data overwriting with third party iOS data recovery software iFonebox.
As professional iOS data recovery software, iFonebox allows you to recover your iPhone or iPad data lost during the iOS 9 updating easily and selectively.
iFonebox provides three ways of recovering lost data including recovering from iOS device, recovering from iTunes backup and recovering from iCloud backup. As data lost during iOS 9 updating is permanently wiped out of your iPhone or iPad. You have to choose to recover from iTunes or iCloud backup file.
You can download a free trial version at first to have a try and then decide whether to pay for the license of full version.
Recover from iTunes Backup
Make sure you have synced your iPhone or iPad to iTunes before the iOS 9 updating as I have mentioned in the article of “Tips to updating iOS 9 Safely and Successfully” and have created iTunes backup file.
Step 1.Install and run the full version of iFonebox. Choose the recovery mode of “Recover from iTunes Backup”. Then you will be presented with an interface listing all the iTunes backup file. Choose one from which you wan to recover your lost data.

Step 2.Choose the data you have lost during the iOS 9 updating by clicking on the icon of the data category.

Step 3.Preview the exported data and choose whatever you want to recover to your computer. You can choose to recover the deleted items only by check “Only display the deleted items.” And click to transfer to computer.

Note: If you have lost contacts or notes, you can click to recover the exported contacts and notes items to your iPhone or iPad directly.
If you don’t have iTunes backup file, you can recover from iCloud backup file through iFonebox. I am going to get down to detailed steps here, you can refer to the previous guide “How to restore your iPhone from iCloud backup?”.
